The Evolution of Autos

Over the years, auto safety has evolved greatly from basic seatbelts, air bags and head lights into high-tech vehicle features which help not only protect the occupants of a vehicle in the event of a crash, but aim to prevent accidents all together. Some of the most modern safety features can actually help drivers avoid accidents entirely, and with self-driving vehicles only a decade away, motorists are safer on the roads than ever. Constant innovation has not only led to greater crash survival rates, but has decreased the amount of injuries and severe incidents across the nation.

Crash Avoidance

More and more new vehicles are implementing highly advanced crash avoidance systems into their vehicles to better improve consumer safety. While originally offered as additional options on a few luxury vehicle models, crash avoidance technology has steadily spread to not only average consumer vehicles but also commercial fleets. These technologies are rapidly improving too, evolving from simple alert functions to automated corrective maneuvering. Some of the most common crash avoidance features include lane departure warning and correction, blind spot detection, adaptive headlights, park assistance and back-over prevention.

A Safer Future

What is to come in the future? Many automakers have vowed to introduce driverless vehicles into the commercial market in the next ten to fifteen years which they claim will revolutionize driving as we know it by 2050. While the days of accident free vehicle operations may seem far-fetched, they may not be so far away. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there are many significant safety advances being made in intelligent transportation systems that could allow vehicles to communicate with one another or with road infrastructure to increase accident avoidance.
